Positive Star Trek Into Darkness Reviews

TrekToday Headlines - Wed, 05/01/2013 - 20:25

Early reviews for Star Trek into Darkness are emerging and the reviews are good.

Excerpts from several reviews appear below, and there are no spoilers for those trying to avoid them ahead of the movie release.

“The revived Star Trek films are shaping up to be the opposite of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman tales in that they’re light on bleakness and attitude,” said Time Out‘s Dave Calhoun. “There are enough gags (Simon Pegg is fun again as Scotty) and wit (the tension between Kirk and Spock is winning) between darker bouts of space fighting and ship-saving to keep the mood airy and unpretentious.”

“Director J.J. Abrams has followed up his sensational 2009 Star Trek reboot with a sparkling 3D sequel,” said The Guardian‘s Andrew Pulver. “People are unlikely to charge out of the cinema with quite the same level of glee as they did in 2009; but this is certainly an astute, exhilarating concoction.”

“If this is Abrams’ final frontier, he has left Star Trek in a good place, both in the fictional universe and as a franchise,” said Ian Freer of Empire. “In some sense, the title is misleading. Into Darkness is a blast, fun, funny, spectacular and exhilarating. The rule of great even-numbered Trek movies continues.”

Total Film‘s Matthew Leyland calls the movie “fantastic fun,” although “at a certain point, peril-fatigue starts to creep in.

“Abrams’ aim with Into Darkness was to mint a standalone adventure, one that welcomed total Trek neophytes at the door. Mission accomplished.”

Watch: Into Darkness Celebs Say Hi To TrekMovie Readers At Berlin Premiere

TrekMovie.com - Wed, 05/01/2013 - 05:21

At the Berlin Star Trek Into Darkness premiere the celebrities spent most of their time taking pictures, being interviewed for the live webcast and talking to the big national TV press. But a few took a moment to stop by TrekMovie.com’s spot to just say before being whisked away by the PR people. See the video below for JJ and stars sending a greeting to TrekMovie readers.

Berlin: JJ Abrams and Into Darkness stars say hi to TrekMovie readers

Tuesday’s Star Trek Into Darkness premiere was a huge event in Germany with a massive throng of press in attendance. TrekMovie.com is a David among the Goliaths  in the TV media pen (we wanted to shoot video), but with the celebs spending time signing for fans, taking photos, and doing the live webcast interviews, there was little left for them to work the press line. However a few Star Trek celebs spotted the TrekMovie.com sign (with a joke noting Nacelles Monthly as well). And some (notably Quinto, Abrams, Eve and Pegg) stopped by to send a greeting to the fans who frequent TrekMovie.com. Watch the video from the red carpet below.

Report & Pix from Into Darkness Berlin Press Conference

Report by Constantin Hirsch

Before the stars hit the red carpet, Paramount Germany held a press conference with director J.J. Abrams along with Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Alice Eve and Simon Pegg.

The press conference started with a bang when Abrams being shocked by the first journalist took the microphone. Journalist:" As a fan, I’m f–king angry about the movie! So f–king angry that I want to hit you in your face!” J.J. looked scared. The whole cast was wondering, is this really happening? J.J. seemed to start with an apology. Journalist: "…cause after a hundred and thirty minutes, the movie is over.” All started to laugh.

There were a number of questions for J.J. Abrams about Star Wars but he pushed those away by saying it was too early for decisions, however he did say that he expects John Williams to return and compose the score for Episode VII (something long-time Arams collaborator Michael Giacchino has said he supported).

When asked what it was like working with J.J. Abrams, the actors  actors were entused. Quinto noted “When you do a movie, you’re working 18 to 24 hours. And J.J. is working three more. So you have to do the same.” Zoe added: “He (J.J.) stays your friend. The J.J. you meet at the set is the same J.J. you talk to after the shooting.” Even Alive Eve felt part of the family very early. When it came to Simon’s chance to ask the question he showed his British wit by sarcastically saying “I didn’t like it.”

Discussing the relationship between Spock and Kirk in the new movie, Quinto said. “They are the opposing ends of a perspective.” He also tried to comment about Spock and Uhura’s relationship, but Zoe jumped in, saying: [Minor Spoiler] "When we have the scene in the small alien shuttle. Spock and Uhura have a serious talk, ‘cause Spock can’t run away. But it is in front of their boss [Kirk].”

The cast also recalled a funny anecdote about a practical joke that Chris Pine and Simon Pegg played on the rest of the cast when they were filming at Lawrence Livermore Lab. Simon and Chris convinced the rest of the cast that they needed to put on a "neutron cream" (which was really just sunscreen) in order to protect themselves from radiation while they were working at the facility. The joke grew and grew, till Benedict – with white cream dots on his face – tried to talk seriously with J.J. about his role. The joke ended with Karl recording a short video with advice for the use of the "neutron cream." J.J. and Simon gave us some hope that we will see the “Cream Stuff” on the DVD/Blu-ray extras.

Even More Berlin to come

TrekMovie has one more fun video from our man on the scene coming up.
